Our design respected the historical significance of the area while contributing to a harmonious balance between modern functionality and environmental sustainability.
By prioritising occupant well-being and optimising biophilic living and work spaces, the integration of substantial balcony planters, with masses of endemic flora, brings the occupants closer to nature in their everyday life. The refurbished Old Cape Quarter received a 4-Star Green Star Design rating from the Green Building Council South Africa.
To enhance water conservation, the landscape primarily features indigenous and endemic plant species.
The consulting team was tasked with transforming the existing development into a modern, mixed-use space incorporating retail, offices and residential units, while maintaining its historical character and integrating it seamlessly into the broader urban environment. An essential part of this transformation was the role of planting,
Our landscape approach ensured that the planting offered inhabitants effective protection from the elements while maintaining the site’s heritage value. Species were chosen not only for their ability to blend seamlessly with the surrounding environment but also for their resilience against the harsh coastal conditions.
The historically significant central courtyard at the heart of the development is one of its most striking features. Big triangular planters were incorporated to house feature planting and provide an oasis from the bustling urban environment of the surrounding streets.
